The Hebrew *ro'eh kelayot valev* ('who sees kidneys and heart') reflects ancient Israelite psychology in which the *kelayot* (kidneys) were understood as the seat of deep emotion, conscience, and inner longing — what we might call the subconscious or soul. The heart (*lev*) was the seat of thought and will. Together, they represent the totality of a person's hidden interior life — nothing escapes YHWH's perception. English translation inevitably flattens this: FOG renders it literally ('kidneys and heart') to preserve the Hebrew anthropology; FOG Message renders 'deepest places of the human heart' as a functional equivalent that communicates the same totality to modern readers.
