Footnotes

The verbal echo here is theologically devastating: the same root *pittah* ('seduced') that Jeremiah used of God in v.7 now appears in his enemies' mouths — *yippateh* ('perhaps he will be seduced'). The prophet who accused God of seducing him is now hoped to be seduced into disgrace by those around him. The term *anoshi shelomi* ('men of my peace') is a covenant phrase — literally 'men of my shalom' — those with whom he had a bond of security and mutual loyalty. That these are the ones waiting for his fall deepens the betrayal. FOG preserves 'seduced' for *yippateh* to make the verbal echo audible; FOG Message renders 'taken in' for readability.
