The *Asherim* (אֲשֵׁרִים) were sacred poles or stylised trees associated with the Canaanite goddess Asherah, a fertility deity. Their presence under green trees on high hills is a recurring marker of syncretistic Baal worship (cf. Deut. 12:2; 1 Kgs 14:23). The verse implies that idolatry had become generational — children were taught at these shrines as naturally as one teaches Torah, making repentance structurally harder with each generation. FOG preserves 'Asherah-poles' to retain the specific cultural referent and the shock of it; FOG Message renders the same term with the traditional English plural form.
