*Eretz tzafon* ('land of the north') is Jeremiah's recurring cipher for Babylon — the direction from which all doom descends upon Yehudah (cf. 1:14–15; 4:6; 6:22). *Ra'ash gadol* ('great tumult/noise') is the sound of advancing armies felt as ground-tremor. *Me'on tannim* ('lair of jackals/dragons') — *tannim* can be desert jackals or the mythic sea-serpent; both images signal utter desolation, a living city reverted to wilderness. FOG uses 'tumult' for *ra'ash* and 'jackals' for the more common reading; FOG Message uses 'roar' and 'haunt of jackals' to land the threatening imagery with visceral force.
