The *ohel* (tent) metaphor is layered: for pastoral Israel, the tent is home, family, and identity. But *ohel* and *yeriot* (curtains/hangings — the same word used here) are the language of the *Mishkan* (Tabernacle), making the collapse of this tent simultaneously the collapse of family and sanctuary. *Metarim* (tent-cords/ropes) are the structural bonds that hold everything together — their snapping means total collapse. Isaiah draws on the exact same imagery for Zion's restoration: 'enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your curtains wide' (Isa. 54:2). This lament is the inverse of that promise — and the reader is meant to feel the distance between them.
