This is the only verse in the entire book of Jeremiah written in *Aramaic* — the international diplomatic and trade language of the ancient Near East (alongside the Aramaic sections of Ezra and Daniel). The switch is deliberate and rhetorical: Jeremiah arms the Babylonian exiles with a ready-made *Aramaic* counter — spoken in the very language of their captors — for confronting pagan idolatry head-on. Even in Babylon's own tongue, Babylon's gods stand condemned. *Elahayya* (Aramaic: 'the gods') and *arqa* (Aramaic: 'earth') are the Aramaic equivalents of Hebrew *elohim* and *eretz*. FOG renders 'skies' for the physical celestial vault; FOG Message uses 'heavens' to heighten the theological contrast between the Creator's domain and the non-creator gods who claim it.
