מַקֵּל שָׁקֵד (*maqel shaqed*) = an almond staff or branch. The almond (*shaqed*) is Israel's earliest-flowering tree, blossoming in late January while the land is still cold — earning its name from the root שׁקד (*shaqad* = to watch, to be sleeplessly alert, to hasten). The vision is a deliberate visual setup for the divine wordplay of verse 12. Both translations render the vision plainly, preserving the anticipation before the pun blazes.
