James uses the birthing verb ἀποκύω here for sin producing death, then deploys the same verb in v. 18 for the Father bringing us forth through the word of truth. The deliberate contrast is devastating in the original: lust conceives and gives birth to death; the Father of lights, of His own will, gives birth to life. The entire passage (vv. 14–18) is structured around this inversion of the birth metaphor.
