The spider-web clothing metaphor is devastating: their elaborate schemes cannot cover the nakedness of shame—an echo of Gen. 3, where Adam and Eve's fig-leaf covering proved woefully inadequate. The word *chamas* (violence) is one of the most loaded terms in the Hebrew canon: it is the precise word describing the earth's corruption before the flood (Gen. 6:11), signalling that Isaiah sees Israel's society at a pre-flood moral nadir.
