*Azei nephesh* — literally 'fierce/mighty of throat-life' — is a striking phrase. *Nephesh* is the whole self centred in the throat: breath, appetite, life-force, desire. These dogs are not merely greedy in mind but in their entire being — their very *nephesh* is directed toward consumption. The savage irony of 'shepherds' (*ro'im*) who behave like 'dogs' (*kelavim*) lies at the heart of this passage; it stands behind Ezekiel 34's extended condemnation of Israel's shepherds and Yeshua's warning about wolves in sheep's clothing (Matt. 7:15). FOG uses 'greedy-throated' to capture *azei nephesh*; FOG Message uses 'ravenous appetites.'
