This first הוֹי (hoy, "Woe!") — a funeral-lament cry pronounced over the living — targets the systematic violation of Israel's covenantal land-tenure laws. The Torah mandated that ancestral land remain within family and tribal allotments and be returned in the Jubilee year (Lev 25); the powerful were absorbing smallholders' plots, dismantling the covenant-shaped economic structure that protected the vulnerable. Interestingly, the word for 'acquiring' is first written of Eve touching the forbidden fruit, a deliberate echo of the fall of humanity.
