He broke up the ground, cleared every stone, and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower at its heart and carved a winepress from the rock. He looked for a harvest of good grapes — but what it grew was bitter and rotten.
He dug it over, cleared it of stones, and planted it with the finest vine. He built a watchtower in its midst and hewed out a wine vat within it. He waited for it to yield good grapes — but it yielded only stinking, worthless ones.
