This verse deliberately echoes the Abrahamic covenant promises of Genesis 22:17 ("offspring like the sand of the seashore"), framing the exile as the tragic forfeiture of a blessing that was always within reach. The phrase "blotted out before Me" (*nishmed milfanai*, נִשְׁמַד מִלְּפָנַי) is covenant-curse vocabulary — the ultimate erasure from the divine record. Both translations preserve the Abrahamic echo; FOG Message uses "countless" to heighten the sense of the staggering abundance that was squandered through disobedience.
