benot ya'anah — literally 'daughters of the cry/ostrich' — appears in desolation texts (Isa. 34:13; Job 30:29; Mic. 1:8) as creatures of ruin and abandonment. The LXX reads 'sirens.' That these emblems of wilderness devastation should honour YHWH in the new-Exodus landscape is theologically striking: even the creatures of ruin become worshippers when YHWH acts. FOG uses 'desert ostriches' to preserve the wilderness desolation imagery; FOG Message follows the 'owls' reading common in English tradition.
