Footnotes
The מַּעֲלוֹת (*ma'alot*) of Ahaz were likely a series of stepped degrees functioning as a sundial or a stairway-gnomon measuring solar movement. This miracle is not merely a stoppage of time (as in Joshua 10) but a *reversal* — the shadow going backward. Typologically, this mirrors the reversal enacted in Hezekiah himself: from death back toward life, from descent into the grave back into the days of the living. The sign embodies the message.
