Footnotes
The Rabshakeh's claim that YHWH personally authorised the Assyrian invasion is rhetorically audacious — and not entirely without prophetic basis. Isaiah had already declared Ashur to be YHWH's instrument of judgment, 'the rod of My anger' (Isa. 10:5-6). Whether the Rabshakeh is bluffing, has received intelligence from Judean informants, or is unknowingly used as a divine instrument, his words are designed to collapse Hezekiah's theological confidence by turning YHWH Himself into an argument for surrender. FOG retains 'YHWH' for full covenantal weight; FOG Message adds 'mandate' to make the implied divine commission explicit and audible.
