*Am no'az* (עַם נוֹעָז, 'insolent/fierce people') captures both the military aggression and cultural arrogance of Assyria. 'Deep lip' (*imkei safah*) and 'stammering tongue' (*nil'ag lashon*) evoke the experience of colonisation by a foreign-language empire — the horror of incomprehensible imperial commands and contempt. This passage stands behind Paul's citation of Isa. 28:11 in 1 Corinthians 14:21 regarding unintelligible tongues as a sign of judgement. Both versions preserve the double layer of cultural and military threat, though FOG Message makes the colonial experience more emotionally immediate.
