The Hebrew deploys layered reflexive wordplay: הִתְמַהְמְהוּ וּתְמָהוּ ("be stupefied and be stupefied more") and הִשְׁתַּעַשְׁעוּ וָשֹׁעוּ ("blind yourselves and be blinded"). The cumulative effect—staggering, blindness, drunkenness without wine—signals a divinely-imposed spiritual stupor: people going through every religious motion while utterly numb to what YHWH is actually doing among them. Both translations attempt to echo the rhetorical doubling of the original's compounding self-defeating commands; FOG presses the irony of self-inflicted blindness, FOG Message leans into the disorienting absurdity.
