Footnotes
This verse returns to the imagery of verse 2 (the fortified city reduced to rubble), forming a bookend that frames the entire chapter within a single arc of divine judgement. The triple-verb sequence — *heshach, hishpil, higgia* (הֵשַׁח, הִשְׁפִּיל, הִגִּיעַ), 'brought down, laid low, reached to' — is a rhetorical escalation: not merely demolished but ground into the earth itself. *Afar* (עָפָר), 'dust,' echoes Genesis 3:19 ('to dust you shall return'), suggesting that all proud human kingdoms undergo a creation-reversal, returning to the nothing from which they came. FOG renders the triple verb as a punchy list for rhythmic impact; FOG Message uses a flowing construction for liturgical resonance.
