The Hebrew *netser nit'av* (נֵצֶר נִתְעָב) — 'a despised/abhorred branch' — uses the word *netser* ('shoot, sprout, branch') that elsewhere carries explicitly Messianic freight: Isaiah 11:1 announces that a holy *netser* will rise from the stump of Jesse — the Branch of David who will reign in righteousness. Here the same word is wielded with savage irony: the king who aspired to godhood ends as a rejected, unburied shoot — the dark anti-type of the promised Redeemer. FOG renders 'despised branch' to preserve the Hebrew term and activate its ironic contrast with Isaiah 11; FOG Message renders 'worthless branch,' emphasising the total reversal of the king's pretensions to glory.
