*Yarkete tsaphon* (יַרְכְּתֵי צָפוֹן) — 'the far recesses of the north' — is a direct allusion to Mount Zaphon (modern Jebel Aqra on the Syrian-Turkish border), the sacred mountain of the Canaanite god Ba'al in Ugaritic literature, the ancient world's equivalent of Mount Olympus. The taunt mocks the king for aspiring to the divine council's mountain — a seat that belongs to YHWH alone (cf. Ps. 48:2, where Zion itself is identified with Tsaphon as YHWH's true northern throne). Isaiah polemically borrows Canaanite cosmology to expose the folly of all pretenders. FOG transliterates 'Tsaphon' to preserve the mythological and polemical specificity; FOG Message renders 'the sacred north,' making the theological claim legible without requiring knowledge of Ugaritic tradition.
