*Paten* (פֶּתֶן, 'cobra/asp') and *tzif'oni* (צִפְעֹוֹנִי, 'viper') are two of the most lethal serpents of the ancient Near East. Their role in Genesis 3 as agents of curse and death makes this vision a precise reversal of the Fall: where the serpent once brought ruin upon the human family, here the most defenceless human — a nursing infant — plays fearlessly above its lair. *Gamul* (גָּמוּל, 'weaned child') is a child just past the age of nursing, perhaps two to three years old — still intensely vulnerable. The restoration of Eden is complete when even the serpent's sting is undone. Both versions preserve the two distinct serpent terms to maintain the poetic parallelism and the serpent-of-Eden echo.
