בַת־צִיּוֹן (bat-Tziyon) — "daughter of Zion": a personification of Jerusalem as a vulnerable and beloved woman, a figure that recurs through the Prophets and Lamentations. The סֻכָּה (sukkah, harvest booth) is a fragile temporary structure associated with the Feast of Sukkot, evoking both vulnerability and the poignancy of dwelling alone in an exposed field after the harvest is stripped. The three images — vineyard booth, cucumber-field shelter, besieged city — form a descending scale of isolation and abandonment. There is some debate about 'cucumber patch' or 'melon patch' both options are shown.
