אֵיכָה (eychah) — "How!": the opening word of the book of Lamentations, a cry of devastating grief spoken over irreversible loss. Isaiah deploys it here as a funeral lament over the moral death of Jerusalem while the city still breathes. The image of the faithful wife become a prostitute draws on the covenant-marriage metaphor running through Hosea, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, where sexual unfaithfulness is the prophetic idiom for covenant betrayal. F.O.G renders "whore" to preserve the raw, confrontational force of the original; F.O.G Message renders "prostitute" for the same semantic content in a modern register.
