יְרֻחַם (yeruham) is the Pual passive-intensive of רָחַם (raham, "to have compassion"), whose noun form רֶחֶם (rechem) means "womb." The orphan who has lost every human protector discovers in YHWH a deep, womb-rooted, maternal tenderness. Both versions render "compassion/mercy," but the word's visceral origins — womb-love poured out on the most vulnerable — cannot fully survive translation.
