The agricultural metaphor threading through the entire chapter — sowing, ploughing, reaping — reaches its dark inversion here: every verb is loaded with moral failure. כָחַשׁ (khakhash) — "lie/deception/self-denial" — names the actual harvest Israel consumed; the fruit that should have been righteousness and covenant-love (v.12) became falsehood instead, a bitter reversal that the verse's own verbal structure enacts.
