ἱλαστήριον (Kapporeth) is the "atonement cover" — the golden lid of the ark where the high priest sprinkled blood on Yom Kippur (Leviticus 16:15). The LXX uses this same word to translate the Hebrew כַּפֹּרֶת (kapporeth), from the root כפר (kipper, "to atone/cover"). F.O.G preserves the Hebrew transliteration to retain its cultic specificity; F.O.G Message uses "mercy seat" — Tyndale's rendering — which holds together both the spatial reality and the theological convergence: the place where YHWH's justice and His mercy meet over the blood.
