καταφυγόντες (having fled for refuge) is a vivid aorist participle evoking the cities of refuge in Numbers 35 — sanctuaries where someone pursued by an avenger could flee for safety. The image casts believers as those who have run from condemnation into the shelter of God's promise. παράκλησιν (encouragement/consolation) shares its root with παράκλητος (Paraclete, Helper) — the same word used for the Spirit's strengthening presence in the Gospel of John.
