στοιχεῖα (stoicheia) — literally "letters of the alphabet," hence the ABCs or most rudimentary building blocks of a subject. The full phrase τὰ στοιχεῖα τῆς ἀρχῆς τῶν λογίων τοῦ θεοῦ = "the ABC-level basics of the divine oracles." The FOG renders it "basic elements," the FOG Message "elementary principles" — both aiming to convey the alphabet-level foundational character of what they still require.
