ἐτυμπανίσθησαν (etympanisthēsan) — "they were drummed/beaten like a drum-skin" — refers to the practice of stretching a victim across a wheel or frame and beating them. The specific referent is almost certainly the Maccabean martyrs of 2 Macc 6–7, who suffered precisely this fate under Antiochus Epiphanes and refused deliverance on the grounds of their faith in bodily resurrection. The "better resurrection" is therefore not an abstraction — it is the bodily resurrection these martyrs explicitly invoked as their reason for enduring torture.
