μονογενῆ (monogenē) — "only-begotten" or "uniquely-born" — is the identical word used of the Son in John 3:16 ("God so loved the world that He gave His monogenē Son"). The author of Hebrews uses this word deliberately: Avraham's offering of his monogenē son is a typological pattern pointing directly to the Father offering His monogenē Son. FOG renders "only-begotten son" to preserve both the Genesis resonance and the Greek precision; FOG Message uses "one and only Son" — with a capital S — to make the typological echo to Christ explicit and audible.
