This is one of the most significant textual divergences in the New Testament's use of the Old Testament. The Hebrew of Psalm 40:6 reads אָזְנַיִם כָּרִיתָ לִּי—"ears you have dug/opened for me"—referring to ears as the organ of willing obedience, perhaps evoking the ear-piercing of a servant who freely commits to lifelong service (Exodus 21:6). The Septuagint renders this σῶμά δὲ κατηρτίσω μοι—"a body you prepared for me"—possibly understanding "ears" as synecdoche for the whole obedient person. The author of Hebrews follows the LXX, and his entire argument depends on it: the Messiah's incarnation—His coming in a body—is the very thing that makes His sacrifice effective where animal blood could not be. Both translations follow the Greek text faithfully.
