The Greek prosphaton (πρόσφατον) is a rare and striking word meaning "freshly slaughtered" or "newly killed," from the root sphazō (to slaughter); it was used of fresh meat as distinct from preserved. Applied to the "way" of access, it carries an unmistakable sacrificial undertone: this way is freshly opened because it is freshly purchased by the blood of the Messiah. The FOG renders it "freshly opened" to preserve that sacrificial resonance; the FOG Message uses "new" for readability, while "living" carries the vitality prosphaton implies. The identification of the curtain with "His flesh" is one of the author's most daring typological moves—either the veil represents the Messiah's humanity through which He passed in death to enter the divine presence, or His body is the temple veil itself, torn open as the Jerusalem sanctuary veil was torn at His death (Matthew 27:51).
