The Greek syneidēsis (συνείδησις) means literally "co-knowing with oneself"—the inner witness that knows one's own moral state. The FOG renders it "inner awareness" to foreground the phenomenological experience of guilt; the FOG Message uses "conscience" to draw on the moral-theological sense that connects forward to v22's "evil conscience" and the transformation the new covenant promises.
