Woe to the one who commands a plank of wood, "Wake up!" — who orders a mute stone, "Rise!" Can something like that teach anyone anything? It may be dressed in gold and silver, but there is absolutely no breath of life inside it.
Woe to him who says to wood, "Wake up!" — to a silent stone, "Arise!" Can this teach? Look — it is plated with gold and silver, and there is no breath whatsoever within it.
Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Awake!’ or to silent stone, ‘Arise!’ Can it give guidance? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all.”
