וַיֵּצֵא יָצוֹא וָשׁוֹב (vayyetze yatzo vashuv) — the raven never definitively returned to the ark; the doubled infinitive conveys that it simply kept circling, scavenging the retreating waters. This contrasts sharply with the dove's behaviour, which returned. The raven, as a carrion bird, had plenty to sustain it on the flood's debris.
