The 70-day mourning period is remarkable: Herodotus records that Egyptian pharaohs were mourned for 72 days. Ya'akov receives near-royal funerary honours, a testimony to Yosef's standing in the empire. The gap between the 40 days of embalming and the 70 days of mourning implies the weeping began before the physical preparation was even complete.
