Two distinct Hebrew words are paired: כֹּחַ (koach = raw strength) and אוֹן (on = generative vigour, the vital procreative force). Their pairing intensifies Re'uven's former status as the very peak of Ya'akov's power. יֶתֶר שְׂאֵת וְיֶתֶר עָז = "preeminence of lifting/rank and preeminence of strength" — both terms signal double elevation. F.O.G renders these as "first in rank, first in power" to capture the Hebrew parallel; FOG Message uses "supreme in dignity, supreme in power" for liturgical weight.
