וַתְּחִי רוּחַ יַעֲקֹב (vatchi ruach Ya'akov)—the verb חָיָה (chayah, "to live") applied to the רוּחַ (ruach, "breath/wind/spirit") of Jacob. The phrase is literally "the ruach of Jacob lived again"—a resurrection of vitality, as if life re-enters him after the long death of grief. The F.O.G. retains "ruach" untranslated to preserve its layered range (breath, life-force, spirit); the F.O.G. Message uses "spirit," carrying both the personal and theological resonance. The same ruach that hovered over the waters at creation (Gen. 1:2) is what animates Jacob back to life—the narrative subtly linking Joseph's work of preservation with the life-giving activity of God Himself.
