אִשְׁתִּי (ishti) — "my wife," referring specifically to Rachel — not "your mother" or "the boys' mother." Jacob's use of the singular possessive marks Rachel's sons as uniquely, privately his own in a way the other ten are not. Rachel had already died in childbirth (Genesis 35:19), which gives the phrase a quality of mourning. The possessive distinction quietly reveals the favouritism that ignited the whole tragedy — and the other brothers, standing in the room, would have felt its edge.
