Avrech (אַבְרֵךְ) is a hapax legomenon—appearing nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible—and scholars remain divided: it may be Egyptian (a title of honour or a cry meaning "attention!"), Hebrew (from berech / knee: "bow the knee"), or a Semitic-Egyptian hybrid meaning "father of the king." Whatever its precise origin, its function is unambiguous—a public command for all to acknowledge Yosef's authority. The FOG preserves the Hebrew transliteration; the FOG Message uses the traditional English form.
