וַיִּחַר אַפּוֹ (vayichar apo) literally means "his nose burned"—the Hebrew idiom for rage, picturing heat rising in the face. Crucially, the text does not specify at whom the anger blazed. Had Potiphar been fully convinced of Yosef's guilt, the expected penalty for a slave who violated a noblewoman would have been death, not imprisonment—suggesting his fury may have been more conflicted than it first appears.
