שְׁאוֹל (She'ol) is the Hebrew underworld — the shadowy realm of the dead where all go and none return. Ya'akov declares he will mourn until his own descent into She'ol, effectively saying his grief has no end this side of death. The theological irony is acute: Ya'akov believes the covenant promise has been buried with his son, yet Yosef is alive and descending — not into She'ol — but into Egypt, where he will ascend to the summit of power. F.O.G preserves "Sheol" to keep the underworld dimension intact; F.O.G Message uses "grave" for English accessibility while honouring the finality the word conveys.
