בּוֹר (bor, "pit/cistern") is the word the Psalms use for Sheol, the realm of the dead (Ps. 28:1; 30:3; 88:4, 6 — "those who go down to the pit"). Throwing Yosef into the bor is symbolically a death — a descent into the underworld — which makes his eventual ascent to second-in-command all the more typologically charged as a resurrection. The brothers' final taunt, "we shall see what becomes of his dreams," is the sharpest irony in the chapter: they will indeed see, and it will undo them.
