Three verbs mark Yitzchak's death: וַיִּגְוַע (vayigva — "breathed his last," the quiet cessation of breath-life), וַיָּמָת (vayamat — "and died"), and וַיֵּאָסֶף (vaye'asaf — "and was gathered to his people"). The phrase "gathered to his people" is a patriarchal death formula suggesting continuity beyond death — an ancestral community receiving the departed. Notably, old rivals Esav and Ya'akov bury their father together, just as Yishmael and Yitzchak had buried Avraham (25:9); grief proves stronger than rivalry, a quiet grace note of fraternal unity at the graveside.
