כִּבְרַת-הָאָרֶץ (kivrat ha-aretz) — an archaic distance formula of uncertain measure, appearing only a handful of times in the Hebrew Bible. It denotes a meaningful but indeterminate stretch — near enough to feel the cruelty of the timing, far enough that Rachel will not survive. Both versions render it as approximate distance, preserving the narrative tension.
