וַיֵּאָבֵק (vayyeavveq, "he wrestled") echoes יַבֹּק (Yabboq) and אָבָק (avaq, "dust/wrestle"), completing the triple wordplay of v.22. אִישׁ (ish, "a man") is the narrator's deliberately ambiguous word — not "angel" (mal'ach), not "God" (Elohim), just "a man." The reader is left in the same unknowing as Jacob. עַד עֲלוֹת הַשַּׁחַר ("until the going-up of the dawn") gives daylight an eerie limiting power over this being — whatever it is, it cannot remain once light comes.
