הֲתַחַת אֱלֹהִים אָנֹכִי (hatakhat Elohim anoki) — "Am I in the place of God?" — is a powerful appeal to divine sovereignty over the womb. The verb עָצַר (atzar, to withhold/restrain) appears elsewhere of YHWH deliberately closing and opening wombs (1 Sam. 1:5–6), embedding Jacob's retort in a wider biblical theology of divine control over fertility.
