וַיִּתְרֹצְצוּ (wayyitrotsatsu) derives from רצץ (ratsats) = to crush, shatter, batter — a violent word far beyond the gentler English "struggled." Her cry is equally raw: the Hebrew אִם-כֵּן לָמָּה זֶּה אָנֹכִי (lit. "if thus, why this — I?") is deliberately elliptical, an anguished fragment rather than a complete sentence. The F.O.G renders the existential edge ("why do I even exist?"); the F.O.G Message draws out the despair of ongoing suffering ("why do I go on living?"). Both are defensible readings of the intentionally broken phrase.
