The final verb נָפַל (nafal) is genuinely ambiguous: it can mean "fell," "settled/dwelt," or even "fell to the lot of." The F.O.G preserves the raw tension of nafal in "settled over against," keeping the verb's physical force without importing interpretation. The F.O.G Message draws out the prophetic freight of Gen 16:12 — that Yishmael/Ishmael would live "over against" all his kin — rendering the stance as one of open independence or defiance, consistent with the earlier oracle about his character.
